What Is Microtext on a Driver License?

Microtext is very small controlled lettering used as a magnified inspection feature and as evidence of printing capability.

Purpose

At normal distance it may resemble a line; under magnification, correctly produced characters become visible.

Production limits

Legibility depends on prepress, print resolution, ink spread, substrate and lamination. Smaller is not automatically more secure.

Design role

Microtext works best as part of original guilloche or border artwork and under controlled artwork governance.
